Càlig is a picturesque small town of 1.820 people. Its economy is based principally on the agriculture and its lanscape is essentially composed of natural elements like orange trees, olive trees, artichokes and almond trees.
In 1234 the militar Ordre of the Hospital gave to Pere de Balaguer and Bernat de Puig the card of the population to manage the repopulation. In 1540 the Ordre of Montesa built the village in the actual situation relationed it with the castle of Cervera del Maestrazgo.
Calig was conquered by numerous civilisations, we can found iberian vestiges in the Tossa and the Picossa, Romans in the Mas d'Aragó (in the territory of Cervera del Maestrazgo) and arabic in neighbouring villages.
Emblematic Buildings
The parochial church ( Renaissance) of the XIV century. It was reconstructed between 1622 and 1659.
The altarpiece is a work of the master Daniel Chillida (1950).
At a few metres of the village, is situated the hermitage of the Mare de Déu del Socors, of a neoclassic style, of the XVIII century. In the interior we found fresco of the painter J. Oliet.
In the village, it situated the chapel of Mare de Déu dels Desemparats (XVIII century), and is the single oh the four for the village who survives the passage of the time. The older construction of Calig is the Tower (1625).
Celebrations
The celebration of San Lorenzo the 10th of august, dedicated at the patron of Calig and the celebration and the fair of the Socorro the 6th of septembre. With acts like: proclamation of queens and ladies of honour, the carriages, the dances, the traditionnal dances and the bulls on the streets.
